Reversing Rheumatoid Arthritis with Diet

Only in her mid-thirties, Emily was diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis (which is an autoimmune disorder affecting the joints). As a portrait artist Emily was devastated when the crippling pain had worked its way up from her feet, through her knees, hips, ribcage, shoulders, and hands. It got so bad she was having trouble doing daily things like sitting and walking. It was even uncomfortable to breathe and try to sleep. While contemplating her doctor's suggested to try prescription drugs Emily decided to focus on her nutrition first. It was the last day of February when she switched to a plant-based diet and began exercising more. By the end of that May she was nearly pain-free. "I was able to completely go off steroids, [naturally lost] fifteen pounds, [felt more] energized," and was able to paint again, she said.

Dairy Farmer & Hunter Turned Animal Activist

After more than 20 years working in the dairy farming industry—having been family-raised to do so—Chris Mills shares his story of becoming an advocate for animal rights.

"...there was a tractor trailer hauling pigs...that was the day I made the connection. I looked these poor animals in the eyes and I knew they were being sent to their deaths....My heart sank. I felt so bad for them and I told myself that was it! I will never cause harm to another creature again! I never looked back."

In the short blog post on Greener Farm Sanctuary's website, Chris also talks of his upbringing as a trapper and hunter, then meeting a vegetarian woman who later became his wife, and how he and his immediate family are now all vegan. So awesome, Chris! Thanks for all you do.

English Pro Soccer Team & Club Goes Vegan

The Internet went wild last week as the news that English soccer (A.K.A football) team, the Forest Green Rovers, announced that the entire team and club is going completely vegan.

"We stopped serving meat to our players, fans and staff about four seasons ago," said club owner Dale Vince (via a recent article on Edition.CNN.com). He continued, "We've been on a mission since then to introduce our fans to this new world." The article explains that while the club has been vegetarian for the past few years, they've decided to take the next step in going fully vegan (including their beer and cider options). Also cool to know: the club's field is organic and they collect rainwater to use for irrigation. This is seriously super cool, you guys. Keep it up!

John Merryfield Paddles 72 Hours Straight For Animals

For seven years in a row—vegan surfer, stand-up paddleboard racer, and activist—John Merryfield has paddle boarded the 72 miles (continuously and in one day!) of Lake Tahoe, to bring light to the animals.

"Paddling alone all night...around Tahoe is difficult, but pales in comparison to what pigs experience in metal crates...for most of their lives," said Merryfield in an interview with Sierra Sun (via Care2.com).

Merryfield is an endurance athlete and has been vegan for more than 30 years. He is the founder of 'Vegan 1 Day,' a website that encourages people to try veganism for just one full day. So awesome, John! Thank you for reminding us that no matter our passions, we can turn them into forms of activism and sharing our concern for the lives of all beings.

Joisher Kuntal: First Vegan to Climb Mount Everest

Though his mission is not yet complete, Joisher Kuntal—a 35 year old mountaineer who has been living vegan for 13 years—chatted withVegNews Magazine recently about his goal of being the first vegan to climb Mount Everest, and of his experience battling the 7.8 earthquake that shook Nepal (killing almost 9,000 people; injuring an additional 23,000), amid his trek up the world's highest peak.

"I was 100 percent sure I was going to die...one of my key takeaways from this incident was that if you have any dreams or passions, the best time do them is now, not the day after, not in 60 years... whatever you want to do, do it now," said Kuntal.

In the interview with VegNews Magazine Kuntal discusses the vegan food he eats when he's climbing, cruelty-free gear, and more. Talk about guts and survival! We heart you, Kuntal!
