Los Angeles schools will start offering vegan meal options to their students!

With the encouragement of vegan teen Lila Copeland and veg celebrities like Pamela Anderson, the Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD) will officially begin offering vegan lunches this fall. "We have had demand and when we get demand like this from our community we institute a pilot to find out [if this] is something we really could implement district-wide," said Steve Zimmer, LAUSD Board President. Since LAUSD is often a model for other schools we are hopeful this turn will take hold once and for all! Hooray!

In an effort to inspire omnivores to give plant-based foods a try, and integrate them into their food choices, MorningStar Farms (the popular vegetarian food company) has released a short documentary series entitled, The Veg Effect. In it, director Alison Klayman highlights vegans and vegetarians from vastly different backgrounds and lifestyles (butchers, a stuntwoman, a tap dancer, hip-hop artists, and a craft beer brewer), exploring the idea that: "...changing the world starts with one simple question: 'What should I eat today?" Klayman says, "It's sometimes hard to explain to someone why you do or don't eat meat, which is why I hope this film will resonate with people...whether you're an everything-eater...or just getting into the eating green way of life."

New Vegan Cookbook: The Taco Cleanse

You've probably heard of it by now. It's utterly taking over the Internet as we speak. From popular online media, to national TV coverage, to quotes from celebrities like Jennifer Aniston, The Taco Cleanse cookbook from four "taco scientists" out of Austin, Texas has brought new comedic attention to the world of cleanses.

With 75 vegan recipes, The Taco Cleanse "shows you how to make everything from tortilla—flour, corn, and waffle (!)—to the thirst-quenching "supplements" (margaritas and other beverages) that best complement your tacos; what to put in the tortilla, and how to re-make popular staples...using plants [instead of animals]."

Additionally, some of the viral coverage doesn't acknowledge that the recipes are all vegan and that it's truly not about cleansing. Way to come up with a creative and funny method of spreading compassion, you guys. Well done, Bogdanich, Morris, Frisinger, and Allison! We dig it.

The Woman Behind Russell Simmoms' Veganism

In a recent interview on Scout22 a one Ms. Simone Reyes dives into her history as a vegan and animal activist, her professional career as Russell Simmons' right hand gal, and how her outspoken ways led to Simmons' vegan ways.

"[Russell] used to laugh and poke fun at my office that was draped in images of the bloody slaughter houses and animals suffering in labs...Once he joined Jivamukti Yoga studio...he soon understood why I am so passionate about the plight of animals," said Reyes.

Simone goes on to discuss her vegan heroes, her activism through projects with Sea Shepherd, Stray Cat Alliance, and others; as well as how she finds strength to push through the inevitable ups and downs that come with living an activist lifestyle. It's also fun to learn that Simone's favorite vegan product  is Vegenaise. How timely! Way to be, Simone. We're so glad to learn of all you do for the animals.
